Four Decades of Fitness, Friendship and Fun

When a small group of runners got together for an informal run in Barrow in 1982, little did they realise that it would become a thriving club, Barrow Runners, that celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025 and has a membership of over 200.

Fifty people arrived for the first run. As time went on, the club became an official group, called Barrow Runners. Club colours of red, white and yellow were chosen and this smart running vest is still worn with pride four decades later.

The club’s status was formalised in 1985 when a committee was formed, with John Earle as president; Dave Rose, chairman; Mick Ballard, secretary; Jo Chappell, ladies’ captain; and Roger Latham and it became a member of the Leicestershire Road Running League. So, although its origins date back to 1982, its 40-year anniversary was celebrated this year.

Both men and women run, and the age range is vast, from children as young as six, to the club’s oldest member Mick Ballard, 79, whose enthusiasm for running is boundless. I asked Mick if there was ever a time when he couldn’t be bothered to go for a run.

“Never,” he said. “I always say to people ‘The hardest thing about running is putting on your shorts’.”

So, when and where do Barrow Runners run?

Tuesday night is club run evening, and routes vary according to the time of year. Groups run at varying paces with the distance between five and seven miles. Each group has a leader, who ensures that nobody is left behind. Thursday nights are training nights with structured sessions led by qualified England Athletic (EA) coaches.

The club is open and inclusive and welcomes runners of all abilities and includes Couch to 5k programs led by an EA coach. There is plenty of friendly competition between members, but it’s not all competitive - the last runner home in any race or training run is as important as the first one in and often gets the biggest cheer. If you’re unsure about running, you’re welcome to come along and give it a go before joining the club.

Serious members compete in races around the country and even the world, including iconic marathons such as London, Berlin, New York and Boston. The club also organises local events like its own Watermead 10km race.

The Juniors section (from school year two) is led by Ian Paramore. Children can then move to the adult section at age 18, although they can train with the adults from age 15.

Social events are held throughout the year, and the club celebrated its 40 years with relay races at the Quorn track, followed by a buffet at Quorn Football Club. Mick Ballard and Jo Chappell (the club’s president) were presented with awards for their many years of service to the club.

Other outings include theatre trips; summer BBQs; curry nights; an annual dinner dance and presentation; and a fancy dress run through the streets of Barrow, followed by a Christmas party. Every year the club has a charity to support - this year it’s Dementia UK’s Leicestershire branch and funds are raised through events and a Christmas raffle.
