Relax Kids Classes will start in Barrow in September

We have all heard and read about the stresses and anxieties that many of our children experience in today’s high-pressure world. Starting in September in Barrow library, a new kind of class will be offered to junior age children (5 – 10 years). It will aim to help them relax and be calm, feel confident, focus and concentrate, be imaginative, develop creativity and sleep better. In a nutshell, it will give them the tools to cope with modern living while playing games and having fun.

The Barrow resident who is bringing this great opportunity to Barrow’s children is Helen Filkins, a recently retired primary teacher. She is passionate about the award-winning Relax Kids principles. She is fully trained and has already run many sessions in her school. She says, “Children loved the sessions and were eager to do more. They really enjoyed the mixture of activities and responded so positively.” She showed me some of the things she uses in her classes: a soft toy meerkat which she uses to explain to younger children how the brain works, a calming glitter stick, a brilliantly coloured windmill and a squishy starfish cushion.

Every session is carefully structured according to the Relax Kids 7 steps: Move, Play, Stretch, Feel, Breathe, Believe, Relax. There will be movement exercises including dance and games; play that may be energetic or drama-based but will always be enjoyable; yoga-inspired stretching and balance games; and many imaginative ways of exploring and experiencing feelings including self-worth and confidence. Children can go on a different adventure each week from pirates to magic to outer space to wizards. Classes are fun, lively, creative and, most importantly, relaxing. Children leave feeling refreshed, having had a good time.

You can visit www.relaxkids.com to find out more. There are impressive accounts of pilot studies of the effectiveness of Relax Kids principles, lists of endorsements including the NHS, Ofsted and educational psychologists, and accounts of schools who have used Relax Kids classes to reduce exclusions, improve behaviour and support children with mental health difficulties or with special needs

. You can also contact Helen on 07791517472 or helenfilkins@outlook.com

Barrow Voice wishes Helen every success in setting up this new opportunity for our children. Judith Rodgers
