Fame: fleeting fame
Barrow made national press headlines on August 2nd when a large section of the Grove Lane Railway Bridge collapsed onto tracks connecting London St. Pancras and Nottingham. The tracks were quickly cleared but the road is still closed. Network Rail’s regional press officer told Barrow Voice no Grove Lane opening date could be given as, although stabilisation work is ongoing, a detailed design for the bridge has yet to be completed and this needs to be done before any action-plan can be decided upon.
As Network Rail’s spokesperson wouldn’t speculate, on August 8th I asked people in the village to do so. Opinions varied. Some were an optimistic ‘four to six weeks’, others a more pessimistic ‘six months’, with many opting for three. But, whenever it is, there will be a Community Event to mark Grove Lane’s re-opening. Network Rail is giving us a party... then into 2017 is my guess!
