In January 2016 Heather Dipple, supported by the Charnwood Recreation and Leisure Team, started the Barrow Walking for Health Group. Soon afterwards June Exley became a second leader and several more have now been trained by the Charnwood team. The aim of these groups is to encourage everyone to get fit by walking even if you have never walked much before.
The walks have taken place every Tuesday starting at 10:30am at The Three Crowns and last about one hour finishing at the same place. Anyone who comes by car can park in the pub car-park with kind permission of the managers. The walks have become very popular and approximately 35 people now attend. It is surprising how many different routes of about 2.8 - 3 miles can be followed around our lovely village. The group is very friendly and new people are always welcome. Comments that walkers have made are: “it’s very sociable”, “we have seen parts of the village we have never seen before”, “we often go for a coffee afterwards”, “it’s good fun”, “I didn’t know a soul in Barrow but I do now”.
The popularity and success of the group was recognised in December 2016 at the Charnwood Sports Award Evening. The Barrow Walking for Health Group won the Best Community Sport/Physical Activity Project. June Exley and David Dipple attended on behalf of the group.
After a year we are now in a position to be able to offer 2 walks, one group will do the usual hour walk of nearly 3 miles and the other will walk for up to 90 mins (4 - 4.5 miles) at a slightly faster pace. We depend on having two available leaders to offer this: if only one leader is available we will always do the shorter walk. Walk-leader training is provided free from the Charnwood team so if you are interested in this please contact them. The more leaders we have the easier it is to offer two walks each week.
Why not come and join us? Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. If you need any further information, contact Heather by email firstname.lastname@example.org.
