An identity crisis for Barrow?
‘Village fears it will be swamped by housing’ ran the headline in the Leicester Mercury in July and it comes as no surprise that the village in question was Barrow. Even before all the houses on the present David Wilson/Miller Homes Cotes/Nottingham Road site are built and sold, Jelson Ltd are reported to be testing the water at Charnwood Borough Council for a whole new housing project on a 38- acre site off Melton Road.
Barrow has a thriving centre with shops and services; it has regular bus and rail services and easy access to motorway links. It has an attractive riverside location and a strong community spirit. You can see why people want to live here. But can upwards of another 1000 residents be accommodated without the village losing the very things which attract people to it?
One resident of Melton Road, who did not want to be named, expressed her concerns.
‘Barrow has already grown too big. It’s not NIMBYism to say ‘no more’, rather a desire to keep what is good in the village.’
At their August meeting, Barrow Parish Council passed the following resolution: To write to the Developer to express concern and to request involvement at all stages and to notify County Council Highways of concern relating to traffic matters.
